Using a variety of data sources OriginsInfo has created a database of over 2,000,000 family names and 700,000 personal names. Each of these names is common somewhere in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia or the Muslim world.

Enter a person's name and you will be able to identify:

  1. The origin of the personal name
  2. The origin of the family name
  3. The most likely origin of the person with that combination of personal and family name

Bear in mind that many names are common in more than one country. This application is optimised for names of people currently living in the “Anglo Saxon” world, the US, the UK and Australia and would return different results if configured for residents living elsewhere
